Label of trumpeter Ted Daniel, incorporated originally to release his sextet recording from 1970 on vinyl and an important artist-run imprint of the Loft Jazz scene. The label has since resurfaced, primarily to keep the Sextet recording in print.
The Ujam of Ujam Records is a contraction for Ujamma, a principle of Kwanzaa and the Kiswahili word meaning cooperative economics. Ujam Records was founded as a means of empowering independent artists.
In an era where major labels not only control artist promotion, but also artist development, it is essential to allow artists to control their own spiritual, intellectual and musical growth.
Ujamaa = Freedom
