Russell, renowned as one of the foremost interpreters of mid-20th century American music, is that rarest of entities – a genuine jazz and blues singer – who can sing virtually anything. Russell has performed with David Bowie, Cyndi Lauper, Paul Simon, Michael Feinstein, Steely Dan, Rosanne Cash, and many others before launching her 2006 debut album Cat to critical acclaim. Three albums later she received a Grammy for her appearance as a featured artist on the soundtrack album for the HBO TV series Boardwalk Empire. Russell is a native New Yorker, born into music royalty. Her father, the late Luis Russell, was a legendary pianist, bandleader, composer and Louis Armstrong’s longtime music director. Bring it Back includes the first-ever recording of “Lucille,” a song of her father’s, recently discovered in the Armstrong archives. Her mother, Carline Ray, was a pioneering bassist, guitarist and vocalist performing with the International Sweethearts of Rhythm, Mary Lou Williams and Ruth Brown.
