About
Focusing on original compositions and inventive interpretations of music from the popular and jazz canons, the Mike Caudill Quartet features an instrumentation that lacks a chord-providing instrument, such as piano or guitar. With a second horn, the group continues the tradition of “chordless” sax and trumpet groups like the Gerry Mulligan/Chet Baker collaborations of the early 1950s up to the more recent horn collaborations of Mark Turner/Avishai Cohen, for instance.
Continuing the tradition of “2 horns, no chords”, the group creates its own spin by fusing harmonic and rhythmic elements of many genres. Because of this, the band labels its music “acoustic progressive jazz”, which builds on the strength of satisfying melodies with ample space for improvisation and exploration. ...
