An alumnus of Berklee College of Music, Ricardo teaches in the Percussion and Ensemble departments. He is an accomplished drummer, percussionist, and studio musician who has toured and performed with the Boston Pops Orchestra. He has performed for the “Chris Botti in Boston” concert/video/CD with Sting, Chris Botti, John Mayer, Josh Groban, and Yo Yo Ma. Performances with Abe Laboriel, George Duke, Aretha Franklin, Mario Frangoulis, Tata Vega, Donna Summer, The New York Voices, Stanley Clark, Lenny White, Mary Wilson of the Supremes, Dan Moretti, the Epic Brass Quintet, Deborah Henson-Conant, Myanna, Bernard Purdie, Jethro Da Silva, the Greg Hopkins Big Band, and the Orquesta Sinfonica de Guatemala. A highly sought-after studio musician as well, Ricardo has recorded on the Grammy nominated “Latin Album” with the Boston Pops, 2016 Grammy nominated song “A chama verde” with John Finbury and Marcella Camargo, The JCA Orchestra, The John Coltrane Memorial Concert, New World Jazz Octet, Larry Watson, Darrell Nulisch, Geoff Bartley, and Walter Beasley, including Grammy nominated “Ready for Love” which reached #1 Billboard Contemporary Jazz chart and #1 on SmoothJazz.com. He was featured with Dan Moretti's band on Jazz Player magazine's play-along contemporary jazz CD. He recorded percussion tracks for the film Squeeze, the Mary Tyler Moore HBO special, Montages on Copan, Mayan Passages by John Moore, and other documentary films. Recently in 2014 wrote music for local Boston film company Tallboy “Stories for dinner” He was also featured on the Thaddeus Hogarth video “LIVE AT BOSSE”.
Ricardo is the leader of his own Jazz Quartet and of the Marimba Canto De Guatemala, The Ricardo Monzón Orchestra, Jazz for Kids and Mamboston. His Orquesta Bacharengue won the Berklee Urban Service Award for providing the Performance of the Year at the Tito Puente Latin Music Series in 2010. Also in 2010, Ricardo was officially recognized by Mayor Menino for his “tireless commitment and dedication to the Guatemalan community in the City of Boston”.
Ricardo is the creator of the concert series: THE MARIMBA MUSIC OF GUATEMALA, at Berklee College of Music, and the author of BASIC AFRO- CUBAN RHYTHMS FOR PERCUSSION AND DRUM SET, an instructional DVD published by Berklee Press.
