Tonight's guests
SPOOKY GHOST aka GERRY LEONARD
Gerry Leonard is an artist, guitarist, producer and composer who has
worked with David Bowie, Suzanne Vega, Rufus Wainwright, Laurie
Anderson, Duncan Sheik, Roger Water and many more artists. Gerry was
David Bowies music director, co-writer and guitarist on Davids
Reality world tour and the DVD (2003/4). In addition to his
contributions on Bowies previous two records, Heathen (2001) and
Reality (2003) - and the subsequent tours - he is also featured on
the penultimate David Bowie album titled The Next Day and had two
co-writes with David on the album, Boss of Me and Ill Take You
There. The Next Day came out in 2013. Gerry was honored to be part
of the Brit Awards Tribute to David in Feb 2016, and continues to tour
with the Celebrating David Bowie band.
Leonard is also a producer, co-writer and guitarist for Suzanne Vega
on her album "Tales from the Realm of the Queen of Pentacles (2014)
and also produced and arranged her most recent album, songs from a
theater play based around the life and works of the author Carson
McCullers (2016). Gerry continues to tour with Suzanne Vega on both
her anniversary tour (Solitude Standing and 99.9F) and her Carson
McCullers tour (2017/18).
When not touring or recording with these international artists,
Leonard heads up his own project, Spooky Ghost, under which he has
recorded two solo albums. The first recording simply called Spooky
Ghost was primarily an ambient guitar record, made in 1998. His
second, The Light Machine (2002) has been described by David Bowie
as "Quite the most beautiful and moving pieces of work I have
possessed in a long time." A third Spooky Ghost album is currently in
the works.
Formed in 1998 by Rivard with the encouragement of Morphines Mark Sandman (who guested with the group until his death in 99), the music draws from a startlingly wide spectrum of styles, including jazz, hip hop, electronica, avant garde, prog-rock and dub. Under the tutelage of member Brahim Fribgane (who hails from Casablanca) the band absorbed Moroccan trance influences and frequently adds this element to the mix. Audiences of all persuasions are drawn to Fribganes mesmerizing oud stylings and Rivards commanding playing of the Moroccan sintir, a 3 string bass lute used by the Gnawa people of Morocco, a mystical brotherhood of trance-healers. Derived from such ancient sources as these, trance forms the central core of the Club dElf aesthetic, unifying all of the various genres the band has absorbed.
